Quarterback Pedro Cabrera threw four touchdown passes as host Southwest defeated South Miami, 35-12, Wednesday night at Tropical Park. The Cobras (0-2) jumped out to a 6-0 lead when they marched 40 yards, all on the ground, after a good opening kickoff return. The Eagles (2-1) needed only three plays to take the lead. An 18-yard run by Matthew Lefevre set up a 22-yard scoring pass from Cabrera to Livan Morales. The Sebastian Raga extra point made it 7-6. After South Miami turned their first second-quarter possession over on downs, Cabrera hit Andis Jackson for a 70-yard catch-and-run to stretch the lead to 14-6. Late in the third period, the Cabrera to Morales connection from seven yards out increased the margin to 21-6. Cabrera found an open Christian Morales on a 53-yard scoring pass to make it 27-6 after a blocked extra point. The Cobras cut their deficit to 27-12 two minutes later before Lefevre broke free on a 53-yard run for the final touchdown.
Ethan Raya caught a 2-point conversion pass for the final margin. In addition to his offensive heroics, Morales had a monster game on defense as he seemed to live in the South Miami offensive backfield. Southwest plays at Homestead next week on Thursday night.
